These are 2-tank boat dives for certified divers and
the locations of the actual dives are always determined in the morning
depending on the interests of the divers and on the weather. We do not
take snorkelers. For information on Coral Spawning
dives, please see Special Charters.
Time:
Meeting time is 6:00 AM
and we return between 11:30 and 12:30.
If you're wondering why we meet so early, the almost daily tradewinds
start to pick up around 11:30 or 12:00 and this allows us to be
underwater or on our way home when they start.
The Boat:
Pilikai (embrace the sea) is a
38-foot painted aluminum Munson with twin 300 hp engines, hard-top sun
roof, head, broad swim platform, ladders designed especially for divers
wearing fins, and loads of deck space. A fresh water shower is
available for rinsing off and for rinsing cameras. We take twelve
divers on the boat; however, the divers are split into two groups of
six for a peaceful, uncrowded experience underwater.
Dive Equipment:
We use ScubaPro BC's and ScubaPro regulators with
Oceanic computers. We have 3mm or 7mm wetsuits depending on your size
(3mm for
people over about 185 pounds and 7mm for people less than about 185
pounds who chill more easily). Water temperature varies from 74 degrees
F (24 degrees Celsius) in Jan, Feb, Mar to 80 degrees F (27 degrees
Celsius) in July, Aug, Sept. There is no thermocline. Unless you weigh
more than 200 pounds or are very warm blooded, don't even THINK of
wearing just a fleece dive skin!
Safety:
Safety is a high priority. In our twenty-nine years of
operation we are accident-free. We carry a high quality oxygen system
and all crew are well-trained in its use. All crew are also current in
CPR and first aid. VHF radios and a cellular phone are on-board for
communication.
Food:
Decaf and regular coffee, hot chocolate (in the "winter"),
just-baked macadamia nut cinnamon rolls and cookies, fruit, juices,
bottled water,
soda and snacks are provided.
Where to meet:
Kihei Boat Ramp. MAP .Yes,
there is parking there.
Directions from Lahaina/Kaanapali area:
Drive south on highway 30 until the junction with highway 310 to
Kihei. After getting on highway 310, in less than five minutes,
you will encounter your first stoplight. Go through the stoplight (do
not make any turns there!) and 5.5 miles after that first stoplight
turn right onto Kilohana Dr. That takes you down to the water where you
will turn right onto South Kihei Road. The Kihei Boat Ramp is a few
blocks down on your left, just past the Mana Kai hotel. Pull in and
look for the boat with Mike Severns Diving on the side. You should
leave 50 minutes in order to get there from Lahaina/Kaanapali and 60
minutes from areas north of Kaanapali.
Directions from Wailea:
Go north from your hotel/condo and turn down to the water as soon as
the road allows. Drive along until you see the Mana Kai and Kihei
Surfside hotels on your left. The Kihei Boat Ramp is just past the Mana
Kai and The Kihei Surfside. Every place in Wailea is less than a ten
minute drive to the ramp.
Directions from Kihei:
Drive south on South Kihei Road. You will encounter three beach parks
called Kamaole Beach Parks 1, 2 and 3. The Kihei Boat Ramp is just past
Kamaole Beach Park 3. Leave fifteen minutes to get there from north
Kihei and less if you are closer.
Directions from Kahului:
Come over on highway 350 until the junction with highway 31 at the
stoplight. Turn left onto highway 31 and 5.5 miles after that, turn
right onto Kilohana Drive. That takes you down to the water where you
will turn right again onto South Kihei Road. The Kihei Boat Ramp is a
few blocks down on your left. Pull in and look for the boat with Mike
Severns Diving on the side. It will take you about 30 minutes from
Kahului.
Cost :
Our two-tank dive trip is $130 including mask, fins, tanks and weights.
A wetsuit, BC and regulator with
computer are $5 each for a total cost of $145 if you need
all gear. If you dive with us three days or more, there is a discount
of $10 per day. Private charter rate is $1500. Prices are current
and discounts apply only to reservations made directly with Mike
Severns Diving. Plus 8% taxes/fees.
We donate one dollar of every diver's
payment each day he/she dives with us to the Maui
Reef Fund, a private, nongovernmental fund organized in 2004 which
is used to help protect Maui's coastal environment. In the first year
this money has helped us to make long-overdue repairs to existing
moorings on Maui and Lanai, and to begin the process of getting govt.
approval for new moorings in other Maui areas to make anchoring
unnecessary.
Reservations/Cancellation Policy:
If you have decided that you'd like to dive with us,
please complete the secure
online reservation form or call us at (808)879-6596. Reservations
(at least a few days in advance and sometimes more) are recommended and
necessary most of the time if you want to be assured of availability.
Please keep in mind that we have a 48-hour cancellation policy, which
means that if you give us 48 hours notice that you are cancelling there
is no charge. (Of course if we cancel a trip due to weather, which
happens about 3 days a year, there is no charge either). If you have
questions you'd like to have answered first, please email us. We are happy to
answer them!
